Those Who Want to Save the Planet are Killing It

Anyone that has followed this blog for any length of time understands my disdain for hypocritical climate change activists. It starts at the top with Al Gore and his private jet travels, to those who believe something should be done to fight global warming, yet do nothing to alter their own carbon-spewing lifestyles. I would be remiss if I didn’t give a dishonorable mention to Internet-surfing global warming zealots, especially ones with blogs promoting the hoax.
An article published yesterday by The Sunday Times found scientific evidence of this. Physicist Alex Wissner-Gross found that performing two searches on search engine giant Google generates the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide as boiling a cup of water for tea. From the article:
However, with more than 200m internet searches estimated globally daily, the electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions caused by computers and the internet is provoking concern. A recent report by Gartner, the industry analysts, said the global IT industry generated as much greenhouse gas as the world’s airlines – about 2% of global CO2 emissions. “Data centres are among the most energy-intensive facilities imaginable,†said Evan Mills, a scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. Banks of servers storing billions of web pages require power.
Of course, whenever a global warming activist is confronted with this argument, the answer is usually just stunned silence. I did some research on the amount of renewable energy used in total world consumption. The most recent figures I could come up with were from 2004 and 2005. Only 15% of the world’s energy consumption originated from a renewable power source, although that number can be off by as much as 10% according to a Wikipedia entry on the subject. So, statistically speaking, only 5-25% of blogs and websites promoting the fight against climate change actually practice what they preach. Remember that the next time you meet some Internet troll surfing your favorite website, spewing the global warming drivel. Many of these self-proclaimed climate change “realists†are quick to dismiss any credentialed scientist that comes out against man-made global warming as not being qualified. Shouldn’t we be able to dismiss 75-95% of Internet users that believe the global warming hype?
What about the climate change activists in real life? How does their belief in anthropogenic climate change translate into lifestyle choices? I’ve used the video below a couple of different times on this blog, but the Americans for Prosperity foundation did a fantastic job of displaying just how much lip service, and just how little action is demonstrated by those “concerned†about the future of our planet. It also makes a point of putting ignorance on display.
I just wonder how long it will take before Alex Wissner-Gross is ostracized for his role in helping make these Internet-based global warming alarmists look like fools. My guess is that it won’t take long. Activists are short on tolerance and long on condemnation.
