Global Warming Week-in-Review 5/25/2008
Happy Memorial Day to those of you in America as well as to our fine men and women defending the freedoms of our country around the world. Skeptics Global Warming salutes those who have died in the line of duty as well as those who continue to serve around the globe.
Sunday, May 18:
Prince Charles announced that the world has a mere 18 months left to fix climate change before the planet experiences a series of natural disasters. I didn’t realize Charles had an interest in global warming affairs but, if he bothered to read the news later in the day, the BBC reported that climate change would cause fewer hurricanes. Maybe all you global warming hoaxers should get together in a room and review the climate change activist talking points just to make sure you’re on the same page.

We’re all aware of the debacle that is corn-based ethanol now, but scientists have another brilliant idea: send sulfur into the atmosphere to make the planet less, well, bright, in a term called solar dimming. This would supposedly reduce the amount of sunlight that reaches the ground and make the planet cooler. Speaking of dim, dull and just not all that bright, environmentally-friendly cars just aren’t that environmentally friendly according to a recent report. One automobile tested produced 56% more carbon emissions than advertised and Honda’s entry was just dismissed entirely. I’m still holding out hope that one day science can deliver on a product that’s cheap, reliable and actually lives up to the hype. Then again, they never delivered on those flying cars we were supposed to be using in the year 2000.

Read More: FoxNews.com reported Tuesday on the Lear-Jet Liberals, those Hollywood celebrities who rail against global warming yet continue to fly in their personal jets. Even worse than Lear-Jet Liberals are those liberals that take their environmentalism to the extreme, as is evidenced by the DNC’s catering requirements. Caterers are complaining that the Democrats’ requirements of using locally-grown food and biodegradable plates to satisfy their eco-friendly appetite is expensive. According to the article, the cost of meeting the demands will be approximately double. That’s what a donation to the DNC gets you: expensive food for no good reason.
Wednesday, May 21:
New polling numbers for Canadiens expressing a desire to cut greenhouse gases was released Wednesday with shocking results: 75% of those polled were prepared to modify their lifestyles to help cut carbon emissions and 66% said they were prepared to pay more for goods. The survey sample was 642 people. Cherry picked, perhaps? Also, another badly-placed temperature station was located on Wednesday in Monroe, North Carolina. This one resides near a brick wall, air conditioning units and is on a major highway. For those of you performing your own global temperature analysis, go ahead and scratch this one off your list.
Thursday, May 22:
Finally some good news in the global warming arena: British Columbia officials are threatening to withhold carbon tax income until the government comes up with a way to make the tax revenue-neutral. Being revenue-neutral is the last thing on the minds’ of government officials, so watch for lawsuits and injunctions coming in the days ahead. While the Canadian government takes a positive step, the United States continues to go backward as 30,000 ethanol-guzzling vehicles purchased for the postal service are up to 29% less fuel efficient than their gasoline counterparts, causing the agency to purchase an additional 1.5 million gallons of fuel. Is that why the price of stamps went up again?
Friday, May 23:
Big news for astronomers on Friday as Jupiter managed to create another giant storm in its upper atmosphere. The spot is being blamed on climate change as the equatorial regions of Jupiter warm greatly while the poles cool significantly. All this without the help of man-made greenhouse gas emissions. Incredible! In more extraterrestrial news, sunspots, or the lack of them, are back in the spotlight. Seems a lack of sunspots allows cosmic rays to penetrate the Earth’s troposphere, which ionize nitrogen and oxygen atoms to create more water vapor, thus cooling the planet. Wonder if Gore got that bit of news in his RSS reader this week?
Saturday, May 24:
More spin in an Associated Press article describing a worry over reduced efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions by the U.N. It seems the A.P. made a point of describing the terrible effects of global warming, like melting Arctic ice, but neglected to give equal time to the economic hardship felt by the world as a result of implementing these nutty ideas. Speaking of melting ice, there will be none over the Memorial Day weekend as the higher elevations of Vermont will experience cold weather and snow flurries. The winter of 2007-2008 has been good to the region’s ski industry, as many slopes were open into May.
