The city of New York plans to spend $2.3 billion to cut greenhouse gas emissions, according to this Yahoo News article. The spending plan, aimed at government buildings only, will focus on replacing heating and cooling system and repairing methane leaks at water treatment plants to replacing street lights and buying more fuel-efficient cars. It will be paid for partially by the city budget at a tune of about $100 million per year. Wonder where they’ll get the extra cash? Federal grant (your tax money) or raising city taxes (your tax money)? I’m sure Bloomberg won’t cut excess government waste to account for the extra spending. Good news, though: Mayor Bloomberg expects the city to be making an annual profit from the changes effective 2013…so look for major tax breaks and refunds about that time. /sarcasm
