Back when the news broke about rising food prices due, in part, to ethanol production to save the planet from global warming, I mentioned that the poor was the hardest hit. Today, the MidKnight Review blog explores some other issues where the poor may be the hardest hit in the struggle to curtail global warming. With many around the globe struggling just to feed themselves and their families each day, how can they react to the price of goods that are eco-friendly? Green homes cost more than traditional homes. Green cars cost more than traditional cars. And, on a personal note, we’ve already witnessed news about food riots because staple crops are being converted into fuel. If carbon taxes are levied on food producers, how will the poor eat? And it’s the same people that once stood up for the poor, with their targeted tax cuts and social programs that are now hurting them the most.
