Don’t Believe the Alternative Energy Hype

According to this article, wind energy is five times more expensive to produce than coal. Solar energy is 20 times more expensive than coal. And subsidies are 100 times higher than oil on a per-unit basis. Alternative energy must not be ready for prime-time as energy companies simply aren’t investing in it heavily. At this point, the ROI of clean and renewable energy just isn’t in the positive column.

    You’re right, in a sense: coal is cheaper than renewables at the moment. Still, coal is an awful option overall, and yes, it’s expensive. Look into cogeneration, also called combined heat & power. I’m associated with Recycled Energy Development, a company that turns manufacturers’ waste heat into clean power. Estimates for the EPA and DoE suggest it could produce 40% of our nation’s electricity. Meanwhile, energy costs would plummet due to increased efficiency. So what’s holding it back? WE DON’T HAVE A FREE ENERGY MARKET. Utilities have a monopoly, and it keeps more efficient options from emerging.
