First U.S.-Based Cap-and-Trade Program Launches Today

If you thought the defeat of the McCain-Warner-Lieberman energy plan meant no new carbon taxes, think again.  A regional initiative involving 10 states in the northeast United States is holding the first carbon allowance auction today beginning at 9:00 AM EDT.  In addition, some of the states involved in this regional effort will begin enforcing a cap-and-trade program on their electric power plants beginning next month.  What does this mean for consumers?  At a time of already high energy prices, Americans living in these states will be forced to pay even higher energy costs as electric utilities must reduce their carbon emissions by implementing technology to do so or buy carbon credits to allow for continued emissions at current levels.  Either way, energy companies will be forced into an additional expense.  And those expenses will be passed on to the consumer.
