This is the last weekly commentary of 2008. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
The global warming hoax has proved to be, if nothing else, a topic that should be openly debated instead of being considered off-limits by the climate change activists. Over the last year, I’ve compiled well over 1500 news articles that portray global warming an an inexact science at best and its proponents as being tax-seeking and lifestyle-controlling and, all the while, sometimes even displaying their own hypocrisy and arrogance. Enjoy the year-in-review.
So what about the weather? I know specific weather events do not make climate, even though global warming alarmists do use this to their advantage when it comes to floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, tornados and the like (see Hoaxers Using Weather Inaccurately to Promote Cause). Let’s take a look back at some weather events from the last year. But before we do that, have a look at this Reuters article that claimed 2008 would be in the top 10 warmest years: 2008 to be in top 10 warmest years say forecasters and, conversely, an article that says just the opposite: Scientists Expect a Cooler 2008. And, by year’s end, Australia had the coldest August in 35 years, A town in South Africa had the coldest September night - ever, Denver set two record lows, Charlotte had the coldest November in 32 years and record cold hit Montana. And that’s just from the last page of my cold weather posts. How about more weather posts?

And all the things that cause global warming:
What about taxes and lifestyle changes? After all, I’m a firm believer that the whole global warming hoax is based around taking your hard-earned money and controlling your lifestyle. What have we learned over the last year about these subjects?
First, the lifestyle changes:

All in all, 2008 has been better for skeptics than warming alarmists. With cold temperatures blanketing the globe during the Winter of 2007 and so far in the Winter of 2008, and planetary temperatures continuing their fall from their most recent high in 1998 even as greenhouse gas emissions rise, the evidence against anthropogenic sources of global warming mounts. But, as many of us know from experiences during our lifetimes, if one tells a lie enough, it becomes truth. I want to keep showing the lies here at Skeptics Global Warming and ensure that they do not become truth. Thank you for visiting during the course of the year. I look forward to another exciting 12 months of spreading the real truth about global warming.
Keep up-to-date with the latest at Skeptics Global Warming!

I don’t knock any hard science supporting the hypothesis that humans are not changing earths climate. However, the hypothesis of global warming is not that every single inch of the earth will get hotter each year. The fact that somewhere had it’s coldest day, year, week, minute, whatever, does nothing to disprove global warming. Global warming is a misnomer, the theory is that of “climate change”, so a record cold, if anything, proves the theory. If you’re going to present evidence to disprove a theory then please disprove the actual theory, not just the name.
Climate change? That’s rather grandiose. Although it sounds like the reason you mention for using that is that temps can decrease. More CO2 can lower temps? No big deal then.
How many temp means are in one climate? Or how many temp differences separate climates. To change climate, temps might have to change by ~12F. Is that what’s happening? This exaggeration will eventually destroy the AGW movement.
So basically what the stance of the gloom & doomers is now, in light of a colder year, is that temps will rise when they do, except when they don’t.
Variations in temperature and weather patterns have been naturally occurring since the beginning of the earth. If plummeting temperatures are not cause to question the hypothesis then why can the alarmists use summer heat waves to back up their claims. There is a blatant double standard. It was not the skeptics that were shouting that the glaciers are going to melt away and gave us the perception that temperatures around the globe were on the rise. Why only after a period of decreasing temperatures are we hearing that “no,no that’s not how we said was going to happen”? The exclusion of conflicting evidence makes it nearly impossible to disprove the theory. Thus, it will always be correct. This is not how science is supposed to work.
Thanks for all of the great comments, all.
Tom, you made a very good point. If cold temperatures do not dispute the global warming, why do summer heat waves? It is a double standard. Might have to write up a post around that idea.
Thanks for the great site and links you provide here. Having followed this story closely for years, to me, the most interesting aspect of AGW has nothing to do with weather…it’s the people.
I am amazed at how so many people have totally given themselves to this global warming cause. For some time I wondered if maybe they knew something I didn’t know; that maybe this global warming stuff was over my head. But as I continued to read everything available from all sides I started to notice that the AGW supporters seemed to know shockingly little about the subject, the science, or anything relating to the facts. In fact, most didn’t want to learn about it. There seemed to be no interest in debating the subject, to inquire, to test. All too often the discussion would be ended with an insinuation that I apparently don’t care about the world we live in.
Which led me to this realization: for most of the frenzied supporters, the AGW cause is nothing but a sort of personal ‘brand - sort of like a brain tattoo that provides them with an unshakeable public image as a person who is assumed to be more ‘caring, considerate, intelligent, proactive, and good.’ And the best part is that it requires no real effort at all! For the lazy of body and mind it is quite a deal.
Why bother seeking true purpose in life, or contributing anything to this world or actually becoming a caring, intelligent, proactive, or good, when you can gain the appearance of all these by simply supporting AGW, or being green? Without this kind of support, AGW never would have gotten this far.

Please see the above from someone who’s crunched the actual numbers. Or say he says.
Let’s at least play “Devil’s Advocate” for a moment on this issue to air out all sides. I am more than aware of all the headlines about snow in 2007-2008 vs. those who claim “you can’t use winter” to disprove climate change. When told that Antarctica is cold after all, the editors over at Real Climate respond by saying, “um, yeah–thanks, –we know that already”
NOW: Just out of curiosity, and not to place you on the spot, but what is your opinion or retort to those who claim its not really colder–but that we have more snow due to more VAPOR in the air–in turn caused by …..more global warming and the conduction of vapor toward northern latitudes. In point of fact Greenland IS still melting, as are the arctic ice caps.
Second, there DOES seem to be some acidification of the seas due to more Co2 in the atmosphere due to fossil fuel combustion. Even without significant warming, this is BAD news to most forms of ocean life.
Or not?
Can we get a list of these 1500 news articles that are grouped by what type of media they come from? I would like to know how many of these are actually fact based and not opinion articles, and if any at all are peer reviewed research.
Nice post wakefield!
I’m sure we all agree that Albert Einstein was a genius and was accurate about many things in the scientific world. What many people don’t know is how many peer-reviewed scientific papers he published. One.
Your witness.
Now I’m really skeptical of where you get your information. 4 of Einstein’s first 5 publications were in one of the world’s most prestigous PEER REVIEWED physics journals “Annalen der Physik”. I’m sure your info. on einstein, much the same as the rest of the myths you publish, was heresay.
They were published in Annalen der Physik. Unfortunately they weren’t peer reviewed before publication.
I stole this off of the web, and I realize peer review wasn’t as accepted in Europe at the time, but here is some info. I found you might find interesting
“There is a very good Physics Today article about this. Einstein published his most important papers in Germany before coming to the US in 1933. German journals at the time had little peer review and a very high acceptance rate. Although peer review was more common in American journals, most of Einstein’s publications probably would not have been subject to anonymous peer review, given his reputation. Although Einstein ignored the referee’s comments, the referee (Howard Percy Robertson) had found a serious mistake, and was able to convince Infeld, Einstein’s assistant, of the mistake. The paper which was eventually published had the exact opposite conclusion of the version originally submitted to Physical Review. So it appears that peer review is good for something after all.”
Anyway, I’m glad you finally did your research to set Einstein’s record straight. I’d work on the half-truths you leave as comments on blogs in the future. They need some work.
Enjoyed the debate, however.
wow, no comment on why a review ended up helping research huh?Although I am for peer review, at least i can admit review doesn’t always work. that’s the problem with extreme views on either side. They are unwilling to see things the other way and they get us nowhere…
a comment on Tom’s post. I’ve never listened to what I would call a credible scientist use summer heat waves as evidence for global warming, only sensational journalism and news media. Most climate change research that is the basis for the trend in warming is on much much much longer time scales.
See my comment on the other post.
