No Contingency Food Plan for Cooling Planet

As I was reading an article over at Hypisthermal’s site (Read More: hypsithermal.wordpress.com) on Kansas farmers trying to grow food in cool weather, I immediately began to ponder the possibilities of global cooling.  While my blog typically points out the lifestyle changes and tax consequences of global warming, it’s important to remember what can happen if the planet is truly on a cooling trend and what to expect from such a scenario.

Here in the United States, we have the land configuration all worked out.  The midwest is considered the breadbasket of America.  It’s the heartland, where farmers work tirelessly to produce food for the people of our nation and around the world.  It’s location is geographically situated in an area that’s not too hot, not too cold, has ample water supply and is relatively flat.  There’s lots of land to be used for farming.  The plots are already established.  The farms are already built.  The irrigation systems are already in place.  But what happens if the planet cools?

Depending on the amount of temperature drop, farm land will have to move south quickly.  New land will be sought to keep supply in check with demand.  New farms will have to be built.  New irrigation systems will be installed.  New plots will be established.  But at whose expense?  Will there be enough land?  Will farmers give up their trade out of frustration or lack of funds and just quit?

What if the planet cools more significantly?  Do farmers pack up and move even further south?  Does Mexico then play a key role in the supply of wheat, corn and soy for Americans?  If Mexico isn’t warm enough to sustain crops, will we be forced to deal with countries like Nicaragua, Columbia and Panama?  Do they even have enough land to produce crops and would they even want to?   It’s an interesting topic of discussion.  On the other side of the globe, areas that were once desert could sustain crops.  Libya, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia all fall in a warm zone today that could be great for crops in the future.  How will our relationship with those countries change in the event of a planetary cooling crisis?  Nothing of this sort has been broadcast in the media and it seems no one really knows, or cares, what happens to our food supply if the planet cools.  Will there be a massive change in energy policy to pump methane and water vapor into the atmosphere to warm the planet?  How long will that take to show any results?  It seems our leaders have followed the path of global warming just a little too far and no one is questioning the science behind the myth.  No one reads the published reports of data that suggests the planet may cool.  All the focus is on stopping the warming, but it’s the warming that may benefit us the most.
